VSC
The Victorian Spatial Council (VSC) represents the peak spatial information associations for business, government, academia and the professions. Its mandate is to develop policy and promote best practice for spatial information development, management and utilisation. SII
The Spatial Information Infrastructure Division of the Department of Sustainability and Environment manages and distributes core spatial information including Vicmap. SII provides the Secretariat for the VSC and runs the Custodianship Program on the Council's behalf..
VSDD
The Victorian Spatial Data Directory. This is the current online Search and Discovery Tool for Datasets available tin Victoria. It contains a profile for each dataset known as its Metadata. The user can search on keywords such as gas, bird or parks. At the national level the VSDD is linked to the Australian Spatial Data Directory allowing searches across all Australian datasets.
DataSearch Victoria
DataSearch Victoria is an on-line search and discovery tool for spatial datasets that allows the user to search by geographic extent and data theme, preview the dataset selected (which can be scaled to show a sample), read the metadata, and view the sample over a backdrop orientation layer.
Framework Dataset
These datasets are considered fundamental to the development and operation of Victoria’s Spatial Data Infrastructure. They are the building blocks upon which value adding can occur. Examples are the Vicmap suite – Address, Property, Administrative Boundaries, Transport, Geodetic, Elevation, Planning, Imagery, Hydrography. They are maintained under the Custodianship Programme by Government Departments.
Foundation Dataset
These are the basic data layers which are not sensitive and which the Custodian is willing to licence subject to a Distribution Access License Agreement. For example in a utility they would be the distribution boundary, poles or street lights.
Restricted Dataset
These are layers which the Custodian will only license to a limited number of users e.g. Emergency Services or another utility. These may be a dataset of sensitive electricity isolating switches, critical gas regulators, or gas citygates.
Metadata
Data about data. Metadata is structured information that describes, explains, locates or otherwise makes it easier to retrieve, use or manage an information resource.
Product Description
Datasets for commercial distribution may have a more comprehensive package of general and administrative information called the product description which includes metadata, a pricing and licensing model, production and/or acquisition methods, future plans, linkages to other organisations/data sets, marketing and associated documents for promotion and dissemination.
